Ground school

Free online private pilot ground school

Ground school is the knowledge half of learning to fly: the rules, weather, navigation, systems and decision-making you need for the FAA knowledge test and the checkride. You can do all of it here, free, at your own pace.

What ground school covers

The FAA lists the knowledge a private pilot must learn in 14 CFR 61.105. It includes the regulations, accident reporting, the Aeronautical Information Manual, navigation with charts and radios, weather and how to get it, safe operations and collision avoidance, density altitude and performance, weight and balance, aerodynamics and systems, stall and spin awareness, aeronautical decision-making, and preflight planning.

Our Private Pilot course teaches those areas in 59 lessons across 14 units, in the order you'll use them in training, with a short check at the end of each lesson and the FAA source for every rule.

How online ground school works

  1. Learn the material. Work through the course, a lesson or two a day. The Today page builds a short daily plan for you.
  2. Practice the written. 1,011 practice questions, timed practice tests, and a 60-question simulator that looks and times like the real test.
  3. Get your endorsement. To take the knowledge test you need an endorsement from an authorized instructor who conducted your ground training or reviewed your home-study course (61.35). Share your progress with your CFI from the Today page so they can see what you've done.
  4. Prepare for the checkride. The examiner mode oral, a full mock checkride and the checkride day checklist.

Online vs. classroom vs. paid courses

Classroom ground schools meet on a schedule at a flight school or college. Paid online courses usually cost a few hundred dollars. A free course can cover the same FAA knowledge areas; what matters is that you learn it well, practice the test, and your instructor agrees you're ready. Many students mix both: study here, then ask their CFI about anything that doesn't click.

What makes this one different

  • A daily plan tied to your actual flight schedule, with prep for each lesson in the airplane.
  • 61 examiner-style oral scenarios with follow-ups, and 368 flashcards with spaced repetition.
  • A study coach that finds the topics you keep missing.
  • Works offline at the airport once you save it, and as an app on your phone.

Common questions

Is online ground school legit for the FAA knowledge test?

Yes. The FAA requires an endorsement from an authorized instructor who conducted your training or reviewed your home-study course (14 CFR 61.35). Many students study online and have their CFI review their work and endorse them.

How long does ground school take?

Most students spend somewhere around 30 to 60 hours studying, spread over a few weeks to a few months. Studying a little every day works better than cramming.

Is The Flight Playbook really free?

Yes. Everything is free during the beta, including the full course, practice tests, the oral examiner and the mock checkride.

Do I need ground school before my first flight lesson?

No. You can start both at the same time, and most students do. Ground school makes each flight lesson easier because you already know what's coming.
