Terms of Service
Effective October 19, 2026 · Version 2026-10-19
The short version. The Flight Playbook is a study aid, not flight instruction. Your flight instructor, the FAA's rules and your aircraft's manual always come first. Don't use our tools to plan or fly a real flight. You must be 13 or older to make an account, and if you're under 18 a parent or guardian has to agree to these terms too. The site is free during the beta, and we'll never charge you without telling you first and getting your OK. This summary isn't a substitute for the full terms below.
1. Agreeing to these terms
These Terms of Service (the "Terms") are a legal agreement between you and The Flight Playbook ("The Flight Playbook," "we," "us" or "our"), the operator of theflightplaybook.com and its related pages, apps, tools and services (together, the "Service"). By creating an account, checking the box at signup, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy, which is part of these Terms. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.
When you create an account, we record the date and the version of these Terms you agreed to.
2. Who can use the Service
- Age 13 and up for accounts. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn an account belongs to someone under 13, we will delete it. Parents who believe their child under 13 has given us information can email [email protected].
- Under 18. If you are under 18 (or under the age of majority where you live), you may use the Service only with the permission of a parent or legal guardian, who must read and agree to these Terms on your behalf. By checking the box at signup, you confirm that you are 18 or older, or that your parent or guardian has agreed to these Terms. A parent or guardian who agrees is responsible for the minor's use of the Service.
- Your own legal ability. You confirm that you can form a binding agreement and that using the Service doesn't break any law that applies to you.
3. Educational use only: not flight instruction
The Service provides general educational information about aviation, including lessons, practice questions, flashcards, oral exam and checkride practice, calculators, an E6B, a flight planner, weather decoders, airport information, a logbook tracker and 3D models. You understand and agree that:
- It isn't flight instruction. Nothing on the Service is flight or ground instruction from a certificated instructor, an endorsement, or a substitute for training with an authorized instructor. Using the Service doesn't count toward any FAA training requirement unless your instructor decides otherwise.
- It isn't official. The Service isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or any other government agency, flight school, or test provider. Practice tests and mock checkrides are not the real FAA knowledge test or practical test, and scores on the Service don't predict or guarantee results on any real test.
- Your authorities come first. Your certificated flight instructor, the current Federal Aviation Regulations (14 CFR), official FAA publications (including the Airman Certification Standards, handbooks, the Aeronautical Information Manual, charts, NOTAMs and advisory circulars), your aircraft's Pilot's Operating Handbook or Airplane Flight Manual (POH/AFM), and air traffic control always take priority over anything on the Service.
- Information can be wrong or out of date. We work to cite our sources and correct errors, but regulations, procedures, airport data and FAA materials change, and our content may contain mistakes or omissions. You're responsible for checking anything that matters against current official sources.
- It isn't legal, medical or professional advice. Information about regulations, medical certification, BasicMed, insurance, careers or costs is general information, not legal, medical, financial or professional advice. Talk to a qualified professional (for example, an aviation medical examiner or an aviation attorney) about your situation.
4. Calculators, weather, planner and logbook: never for real flights
- Not for flight planning. Our calculators, E6B, flight planner, weight-and-balance and performance tools, crosswind and density altitude calculators, and 3D models are simplified study aids. Never use them to plan, load, fuel, brief or conduct an actual flight, or to make any decision about the airworthiness, performance or loading of an aircraft. Use FAA-approved sources, your POH/AFM and an official weather briefing.
- Weather and airport data. Weather (such as METARs and TAFs) and airport information shown on the Service come from third-party and government sources, may be delayed, incomplete or wrong, and are provided only for practice. Never use them as a weather briefing or to decide whether to fly. Get an official briefing (for example, from 1800wxbrief.com or a Flight Service Station).
- Personal minimums. Any personal minimums you enter are a study and reflection aid. Meeting them doesn't mean a flight is safe or legal.
- Logbook tracker. The logbook tracker summarizes totals you type in against general Part 61 minimums. It isn't a logbook, doesn't verify your time, and doesn't determine your eligibility for a certificate, endorsement or test. Your actual logbook, your instructor's endorsements and the FAA decide that.
5. Aviation risk
Flying involves inherent risks, including serious injury, death and property damage. You alone are responsible for your decisions as a student pilot or pilot and for complying with all laws that apply to you. To the fullest extent permitted by law, you assume all risk arising from your use of, or reliance on, the Service, and you agree that The Flight Playbook isn't responsible for any flight, training, test or aviation decision you make.
6. Your account
- Accounts are optional; most of the Service works without one. If you make an account, give accurate information and keep it up to date.
- Keep your password private and don't share your account. You're responsible for activity on your account. Tell us right away at [email protected] if you think someone else has accessed it.
- One person per account. Don't create accounts by automated means or under false pretenses, including to get repeated free trials or one-time free features.
- You can download your data or permanently delete your account at any time from your account page.
7. Free beta, future paid plans and payments
- Free during the beta. The Service is currently free. We don't collect payment information, and nothing you do today will result in a charge.
- Future paid plans. We may offer paid memberships, courses or features in the future. Before any charge, we will clearly show the price, billing period, renewal terms, any free trial terms, and how to cancel, and you will have to actively agree before you're charged. Any additional purchase terms shown at that time will apply to that purchase.
- Payment processing. If we offer paid plans, payments will be handled by a third-party payment processor (such as Stripe) under its own terms. We won't store your full card number.
- Free features can change. We may add, change, limit or remove free features, including one-time free features, at any time.
8. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- copy, scrape, crawl, download in bulk, republish, sell or redistribute the Service's lessons, questions, explanations, flashcards, scenarios, images, models, code or other content, except as allowed in Section 11;
- use the Service, or content from it, to build or train a competing product, dataset or artificial intelligence model;
- reverse engineer, decompile or try to extract the source code of the Service, except where the law expressly allows it;
- interfere with the Service, get around rate limits, security or access controls, probe for vulnerabilities without permission, or upload viruses or other harmful code;
- access another person's account or data, or use a progress link or instructor feature to view or change data you weren't given permission to see;
- harass, threaten, impersonate or mislead anyone, including by pretending to be a flight instructor, examiner, school or the FAA;
- submit content that is illegal, infringing, defamatory, obscene, hateful, or that contains other people's personal information without their permission;
- use the Service to cheat on, or help someone cheat on, an FAA knowledge test, practical test or any other exam; or
- use the Service in any way that breaks the law or these Terms.
9. Sharing with instructors and others
- You control sharing. When you create a progress link (one-time or live), anyone who has the link can see the progress information it includes, such as course progress, practice results, mock checkride and oral practice results, upcoming flights, debriefs, logbook totals and the name you choose to show. Only share links with people you trust. You can turn off or replace a live link at any time; a one-time link is a snapshot that we can't recall once you've sent it.
- Assignments. People who have your live link can send lesson assignments and notes to your dashboard. You can ignore or dismiss them.
- Instructors. If you use the instructor dashboard, you agree to use students' information only to help with their training, to respect their choice to stop sharing, and to follow any laws and school policies that apply to you. We don't verify anyone's instructor certificate, and we aren't responsible for the instruction, assignments or advice instructors give.
10. Content you submit
You may submit content to the Service, such as debrief notes, notes for or from an instructor, answers you type or speak in practice tools, error reports and feedback ("Your Content"). You keep ownership of Your Content. You give The Flight Playbook a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, copy, process and display Your Content only as needed to run, secure and improve the Service and to provide the features you use (for example, showing your debriefs to an instructor you share with). You're responsible for Your Content and confirm you have the right to submit it.
Speech practice features use your device's or browser's built-in speech recognition. Depending on your device and browser settings, your browser provider (not us) may process that audio under its own terms.
Feedback and corrections. If you send us suggestions, error reports or corrections, you agree we may use them freely, without payment or obligation to you, including to fix and improve our content.
11. Our content and intellectual property
- The Service, including its text, explanations, practice questions, flashcards, scenarios, designs, graphics, 3D models, videos, software, and the name and logo "The Flight Playbook," is owned by The Flight Playbook or its licensors and protected by copyright, trademark and other laws.
- We give you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for your own non-commercial study and training. Flight instructors may also use the Service with their own students. You may print or save a reasonable number of pages for your personal study, as long as you keep any copyright and source notices.
- U.S. government works, such as FAA handbooks, regulations and the ACS, are in the public domain. Our citations and links to them don't claim ownership of them.
- Third-party names and trademarks (including aircraft manufacturers, apps, schools and government agencies) belong to their owners. Their mention doesn't imply endorsement or affiliation.
- Copyright complaints. If you believe something on the Service infringes your copyright, email [email protected] with a description of the work, where it appears on the Service, your contact information, and a statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is unauthorized and that your notice is accurate. We'll review it and respond.
12. Third-party links, services and affiliate links
The Service links to and relies on third-party websites and services (such as FAA and NOAA websites, the eCFR, airport information sources, video platforms, our hosting provider and, in the future, a payment processor). We don't control them and aren't responsible for their content, accuracy, availability or practices. Some links may be affiliate links, which are labeled where they appear; we may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you, and this never changes what we recommend or teach.
13. Changes to the Service and availability
We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the Service at any time. We don't promise the Service will always be available, uninterrupted, error-free or secure, or that your saved progress will never be lost. Progress saved only in your browser can be lost if you clear your browser data. Keep your own records of anything important, such as your actual logbook.
14. Disclaimer of warranties
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE SERVICE AND ALL CONTENT, TOOLS AND INFORMATION ON IT ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, ACCURACY, COMPLETENESS OR TIMELINESS. WE DON'T WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL MEET YOUR NEEDS, THAT IT WILL HELP YOU PASS ANY TEST, OR THAT ANY INFORMATION, CALCULATION OR DATA ON IT IS CORRECT OR CURRENT.
15. Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE FLIGHT PLAYBOOK AND ITS OWNERS, OPERATORS, CONTRIBUTORS AND SERVICE PROVIDERS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, TRAINING COSTS, TEST FEES, OR PROPERTY, OR FOR PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THE SERVICE OR ANY RELIANCE ON IT, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN TOLD SUCH DAMAGES ARE POSSIBLE.
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR (B) FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS (US $50).
Some places don't allow certain warranty disclaimers or limits on liability, so some of Sections 14 and 15 may not apply to you. In that case, our liability is limited to the smallest amount the law allows. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that can't legally be limited, such as liability for fraud or, where required by law, for gross negligence or intentional misconduct.
16. Indemnification
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless The Flight Playbook and its owners, operators and contributors from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your misuse of the Service, Your Content, or your violation of these Terms or of anyone else's rights. If you are a minor, this applies to your parent or guardian who agreed to these Terms.
17. Suspension and termination
You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access, or delete your account, if you break these Terms, if we're required to by law, if your use creates risk or harm for us or others, or if we discontinue the Service. If we end the Service entirely, we'll try to give reasonable notice so you can download your data. Sections 3 through 5, 10 (license for feedback), 11, and 14 through 21 survive any termination.
18. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We'll change the effective date and version at the top of this page. If a change is material, we'll give notice before it takes effect, for example by email or a notice on the Service, and may ask you to agree again. Changes won't apply retroactively. If you keep using the Service after updated Terms take effect, you accept them; if you don't agree, stop using the Service and delete your account.
19. Governing law and disputes
- Talk to us first. If you have a problem with the Service, email [email protected] and give us 30 days to try to resolve it informally before starting any formal claim.
- Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah and applicable U.S. federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
- Where claims are heard. Any claim that isn't resolved informally will be brought only in the state or federal courts located in Davis County, Utah (or the federal district court for the District of Utah), and you and we consent to those courts' jurisdiction. Either of us may instead bring an individual claim in small-claims court if it qualifies.
- Your rights. If you live somewhere whose consumer protection laws give you rights that can't be waived by contract, including the right to bring claims in your local courts, nothing in these Terms takes those rights away.
20. Electronic communications
By creating an account, you agree to receive service emails from us electronically, such as verification and password reset codes, a welcome email, security notices, and notices about changes to these Terms or the Privacy Policy. These communications satisfy any legal requirement that they be in writing. We won't send you marketing emails unless you choose to receive them, and every marketing email will include a way to unsubscribe.
21. General terms
- Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service and replace any earlier agreements about it.
- Severability. If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, that part will be enforced to the maximum extent possible and the rest stays in effect.
- No waiver. If we don't enforce a part of these Terms, that doesn't waive our right to enforce it later.
- Assignment. You can't transfer your rights under these Terms without our written consent. We may transfer ours, for example to a company we form or as part of a sale of the Service, and we'll notify you if that happens.
- Events beyond our control. We aren't responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control, such as outages of our hosting or internet providers, natural disasters, or government action.
- No third-party beneficiaries. These Terms don't give rights to anyone other than you and us.
- Headings and summaries. Headings and the short summary at the top are for convenience and don't change the meaning of these Terms.
